Conference “why 67 is Too much” – Experiences and Messages on the Pension System
On Thursday, April 4, 2019. the conference titled “Why 67 is Too Much” was held, organized by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and the initiative 67 is Too Much. The conference brought together experts, unions, and the interested public to discuss the consequences of raising the retirement age.
International Experiences
The first panel discussion presented international experiences regarding retirement age limits and demographic and socially sensitive aspects of work after the age of 65.
Belgian Example
Experiences from Belgium were shared, where the government also raised the retirement age to 67 years without adequate discussion. It was highlighted that the key issue lies in the redistribution of wealth and the fact that funds are not invested in people, but solely in companies.
Austrian Example
Experiences from Austria were also presented, often cited as an example of enlightened pension policy. A comprehensive reform was carried out there, finding a solution without raising the retirement age.
Consequences of Raising the Retirement Age
It was concluded that raising the retirement age will actually increase the number of early retirees, as most workers will not be able to endure until the prescribed limit. Experts criticized laws that sacrifice social policies in favor of neoliberal interests focused solely on growth and profit.
Second Panel Discussion
The second part of the conference discussed early retirement and conditions in the labor market for older people. Experts emphasized that most financial costs are shifted to the pension system through mass retirements, further burdening the system.
Solutions should therefore be sought in improving conditions for older workers, taking into account their health and social needs.
Need for Dialogue
It was concluded that making political decisions without dialogue with unions, workers, and experts excludes the necessary multiperspectivity and humanity. This is why the importance of a more active approach to the referendum initiative “67 is Too Much” was emphasized, allowing citizens to express their views on the future of the pension system.
Conclusion
The conference showed that the pension system is not just a matter of numbers, but also of social justice and work dignity. Examples from other countries clearly demonstrated that there are solutions without raising the retirement age, and the Croatian initiative “67 is Too Much” can be a step towards a fairer and more sustainable system.
