The Role of Unions and Society

In a special episode of the URSH podcast with Tomislav Rajković, the president of URSH, we discuss why the union is crucial for every worker: it provides legal assistance, support in negotiations, security, and most importantly – solidarity. The union should not be the “last resort,” but the first stop when a problem arises.

Why “Join the Union” is not just a Phrase

The message “join the union” means that a worker is not alone when they need interpretation of rights, assistance in disputes, or support in negotiations. When pressure or injustice occurs, the union has the knowledge and tools to protect the worker and bring the employer to the table.

Youth and the Union: Getting Involved from the First Job

Special emphasis is on young workers. It is important to build a positive image of the union and motivate young people to get involved from the start of their careers. Rights that are not defended – slowly disappear. Therefore, the message is clear: “You must join and fight for your rights.”

Partner or Obstacle? It Depends on the Culture of Dialogue

In environments where there is a culture of social dialogue, the union is a partner to the employer in improving working conditions and business stability. Where dialogue is lacking – the struggle is harder, but equally necessary. Collective bargaining and monitoring the application of rights are the foundation of a healthy work environment.

When there is No Union: how to Start from Scratch

If there is no union in the company, workers can establish one themselves or seek support from an existing union center. This is a legally guaranteed right – representatives are elected, goals are defined, and organizing and negotiating begin. The key lesson is: organized workers achieve more.

Social Responsibility: Silence is not the Answer

The role of society is to recognize the seriousness of workplace issues – from unpaid hours to bullying. Silence normalizes bad practices, while solidarity and public support encourage employers and institutions to make changes. When the community stands with workers, the quality of work and life improves.

“the First Union Moment” – the Feeling that the Fight is Worth It

Rajković recalled the moment when he first felt that the fight made sense: “When workers realize they are not alone and have achieved something – that is the greatest reward.” This is the essence of the union movement: solidarity, knowledge, and courage to stand up for ourselves and our colleagues.

Where to Next: get Informed and Join

🎧 Listen to the entire episode on our URSH-media channel. If there is no union in your company, start one. If there is – join and participate. Workers’ rights strengthen as much as we are willing to be informed, organized, and united.
